Chubu Prefectures

The Chubu Region

The Chubu Region sits firm at the heart of Honshu, bridging eastern and western Japan. It is made up of nine prefectures: Shizuoka, Gifu, Nagano, Yamanashi, Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, and Aichi. Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and the fourth-most populous city in Japan.

Towering mountain ranges dividing inland valleys from bustling coastal ports have historically played a key role in linking regions, with the Nakasendo and Tokaido routes serving as passages for merchants, travelers, and ideas to traverse across the country. From castle towns to romantic countryside villages, the Chubu region is as rich with character as it is with beauty.

Today, visitors to Chubu can gaze upon the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji, wander the thatched-roof lanes of Shirakawa-go, or explore the vibrant markets and modern energy of cities like Nagoya and Kanazawa. It is a region where Japan’s natural beauty, traditional craftsmanship, and the innate need for genuine human connection cross paths.
