The prefecture with the 3rd largest area in Japan, Fukushima Prefecture is the home of an expansive and diverse cultural heritage, ranging from samurai cities to fishing villages to sacred mountains where monks once meditated on the cliffs.
Travelers can enjoy adventuring through traditional townscapes and hiking through the pristine mountains and lush forests that dot the prefecture, as well as savoring the unique local cuisine. Northern Japan is known for its crystal-clear air and waters, lending itself to the delicious fruit, rice, sake, and other products that Fukushima has made a name for itself by producing and shipping across the nation. If you try anything in Fukushima, try the famously sweet and juicy white peaches grown with love by local farmers in the Fukushima sunshine.
In recent years, the name “Fukushima” has become internationally synonymous with the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident. As a result, many people, both domestically and abroad, have avoided the prefecture due to concerns over health and safety.
Due to extensive decontamination efforts and a gradual reduction in airborne radiation, the evacuation zone in Fukushima has decreased significantly, from covering 12% of the prefecture in 2011 to just 2.2% in 2024. Today, radiation levels across Fukushima Prefecture are comparable to those in major global cities, ensuring safety for both residents and visitors.
Despite facing challenges from persistent misinformation, the people of Fukushima have worked tirelessly to revitalize their region and thanks to their resilience, as well as the support of domestic and international visitors who are drawn to its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, the prefecture is once again thriving.
