Kanto Prefectures

The Kanto Region

The Kanto Region lies in the eastern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu and consists of seven prefectures: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki.

Historically, Kanto developed as a political and military stronghold, particularly during the Kamakura and Edo periods, when it became the seat of shogunal power. From the rise of the samurai to the bustling streets of modern Tokyo, the region has long been a center of innovation, commerce, and culture, influencing the course of Japanese history for centuries.

Today, Kanto is Japan’s most populous region, home to the nation’s capital and a vibrant blend of the ultramodern and the deeply traditional. From serene temples and historic towns to cutting-edge architecture and world-class cuisine, it offers a dynamic landscape that reflects both the past and the future of Japan.
