Mogami River Rafting

The Mogami River has played a vital role in the history of Yamagata. During ancient times, the river was used to ferry important agricultural goods such as rice and safflower between the inland regions of Yamagata, such as Yamagata City and the port city of Sakata.

In this fast-paced, action-packed experience, navigate a section of the Mogami River in a rubber raft handled by an experienced bilingual guide. While the guide sets the path, oar in hand, it’s up to you and your crew to steer and paddle your way down the Mogami, an experience that will bring everyone closer together.

As you make your way down the Mogami, take in the breathtaking beauty and wonder of the pristine Yamagata nature. Along the way, there may be shallow places for you to step out of the raft and explore and play in the Mogami as well. During the peak of the sweltering Japanese summer, there is nothing quite as refreshing as taking a dip and cooling off.

This experience takes place in Asahi-machi, a traditional mountain town with a deep history and rich culture. After completing your river journey, you will receive a free voucher for a nearby hot spring onsen bath where you can warm up, clean off, and soak your muscles after an exciting day of rowing.

Transportation

Due to the remote nature of the region, it is highly recommended that you rent a car when you visit Yamagata Prefecture. However, that isn’t to say that visiting without a car is impossible in the slightest.

Guests who are still hoping to participate in the Mogami River Rafting experience without a car can upgrade their plan to include transportation to and from Uzen-Yamabe Station for an additional 3,000 yen.

From Yamagata Station, Uzen-Yamabe Station is a 13-minute train ride on the Aterazawa Line and tickets are 210¥.

Reviews

I participated with a friend! I was able to experience various ways of enjoying nature such as slowly gazing at the greenery, navigating a strong flow, and jumping into the river to cool off!  I really appreciate that they took so many pictures because now I can look back and think of all my good memories! I want to participate again!
